Stuart in Bloom’s color theme is red, yellow and blue.
Residents and businesses will be able to purchase specially
made blue planters to use in front yards and on sidewalks.
Stuart Mayor Mary Hutchinson, enthused about the project
since the beginning, said the city brought back the Green
Thumb awards to encourage residents and businesses to
spruce up with plants. She would like to see neighborhoods
get together to sponsor areas.
An art contest is under way, with the winner receiving
$500 for artwork to be used on banners that will hang from
lamp posts in downtown Stuart. All of this builds a sense of
community, Hutchinson pointed out. “We have a great community
and this is a grassroots effort to beautify it.”
Whitmer said the public spaces that will be landscaped
and planted include the city’s roundabouts, major intersections,
and the ends of major roadway medians. All have irrigation
systems in place.
“We encourage community and business involvement
through various levels of sponsorship such as floral displays
and landscape enhancements throughout the city, as well as
enhancements to their own property with a signature Stuart
in Bloom Container Garden,” she said.
The idea of seeing blossoms everywhere thrills Stuart resident
Lindsay Hager. “I think it’s fabulous,” she said. “And it
shows that we care about our community and the environment.
It is nice for people who live here, and for people who
come here to visit. I notice flowers and gardens when I travel.”
