campus in 1986, it sat
empty until its purchase
by Martin County in 1997.
“I went to school there
for two years in the late
‘60s when my father was
director of business
affairs,” said Tom Carr, a
local contractor and
FOME board member. “It
is worthwhile to save it
because it has the structural
integrity to save it.
We don’t have a lot of old
sound structures. If the
roof had holes in it or the
stucco had cracks up and
down, I wouldn’t have
had such an eye for saving
it.” It could cost as
much as $3.5 million for
the project, he said.
