services. “It’s a real community institution. I think the cardiology
and cardiac surgery team at Lawnwood has developed
over the years into a cohesive, expert organization. I feel like
we provide superb diagnosis and care, matching the best in
the nation.”
Martin Memorial Medical Center’s Frances Langford Heart
Center, named for the actress and Jensen Beach resident
whose foundation was its primary benefactor with a donation
of $5 million, completed about 260 open-heart surgeries
and 685 interventional procedures from August 2006 through
July 2007.
“We offer the full spectrum of cardiac care, including openheart
surgery and advanced interventional services such as
angioplasty, stents and valve replacement,” said hospital
spokesman Scott Samples.
“We partner with the Ocala Heart Institute,” he said. “The
surgeons, anesthesiologists, the physician’s assistants and the
pulmonologists who participate in the surgeries are from
Ocala Heart Institute. Some of the surgeons were here almost
full time.”
“We also modeled our program based on theirs at OHI,”
he said. “They have helped begin open-heart programs at
about a half-dozen hospitals in Florida, including Munroe
Regional Medical Center, which has been named one of the
top 100 cardiovascular hospitals in the nation for eight consecutive
years.”
The heart center has a hometown feel, said Janice
Meadows, assistant vice president of the Frances Langford
Heart Center.
“We care about our patients, and the nurses are very protective
of their patients and of this program. At the same
time, we’re able to
provide expert
care that allows
patients to return
to their normal
lives quickly.”
“From a personal
standpoint, I
feel more comfortable
having the

Heart Center
here,” Meadows
said. “Before this,
my mother had to
go out of the area
to have cardiac
treatment. Patients
tell me they feel
more secure having
it here. It’s nice
to know that the
community feels a
sense of ease
because of what
we’re able to provide
them.”
“From my standpoint, seeing the difference we make in
people’s lives, it keeps me going. And it’s not just me, it’s the
whole staff that sees a patient come in so sick and then leave
here feeling 100-percent better.”
