As an obstetrician-gynecologist, Dr. Juliette Lomax-
Homier for years had little free time to develop a
hobby outside of her practice of caring for women
and delivering babies. Most of her relaxation came on vacation,
traveling with her husband, Greg Homier, and their
daughter, Nicole, now 15.
The three have seen much of the United States, including
Utah, California, Washington, Alaska and Hawaii.
At home, Lomax-Homier enjoys talking with her patients.
In fact, she chose her medical specialty because of her ease in
talking with other women. “I have a knack for understanding
what the patient is trying to tell me by interpreting and
deciphering things that they have a hard time talking about.”
Lomax-Homier arrived in Fort Pierce in the 1980s through
a National Health Service Corps program. “I was a city girl.
I grew up in New York and graduated from Boston
University School of Medicine. The National Health Service
Corps loaned me money to attend medical school. To pay
back the loan, I needed to go to an underserved city. They
sent me to Fort Pierce in 1986, because there were very few
OB/GYN doctors here.”
Lomax-Homier served as the staff obstetrician and gynecologist
at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center for three
years and then opened a private practice, Just Ladies
Healthcare, in Fort Pierce in 1989. She delivered babies for
12 years and now specializes in gynecology only. “I like the
continuity of people. I’ve had some of the same patients for
over 20 years. I like knowing them and following their
lives.”
Lomax-Homier was recently chosen to serve as a clerkship
director in OB/GYN for the Florida State University College
of Medicine at Indian River Community College. In this
position, she oversees two medical students and will teach
them during two years of clinical rotations.
That program is aimed at trying
to get some of the students to remain
on the Treasure Coast and build their
professions here – taking a path similar
to the one followed by Lomax-Homier.
And speaking of paths, Lomax-
Homier is making her next travel plans
with daughter Nicole, a viola player
who hopes to travel to London this
year with the Lincoln Park Academy
orchestra. “I’m volunteering to chaperone
for that one,” Lomax-Homier says.
