“I'M SORRY MOTHER, HAVE WE MADE YOU ILL?”, 2007

“This was actually the first piece I did in this series. I had just read "The
Education of Little Tree," by Forrest Carter. What I got from this book was
that if you listen to the earth, just as you would another human being, it
will tell you when it doesn’t feel well. I feel that is exactly what is happening
and we really need to start listening. I feel Kurt Vonnegut said it well in
one of his last books that the earth’s immune system is trying to get rid of
people. What I would hope is that after viewing the piece a person would
walk away thinking there is a reason we refer to her as Mother Earth and
very few of us would turn away and do nothing when our mother told us
she felt ill. The stethoscope in the sculpture was actually my father-in-law's
from his medical practice in Washington, D.C.”
