DOCTORS OF INTEREST
Name: Dr. Dennis Tishko
Age: 57
Where I live: Jupiter
Family: Wife, Adrienne; sons
Alexander, 22; Grayson, 19;
Rourke, 17; and Ryland, 15
Education: B.A. Case-Western
University, Cleveland; University
of Cincinnati Medical School,
Residency at Harvard Medical
School, Fellowships at Cleveland
Clinic and University of Wisconsin.
Occupation: Board-certified thoracic surgeon
Hobbies: “Fine music, boating and building and
fixing things in my garage.”
What I like best about practicing medicine: “I like being
part of a team that cares for the patient. I have a chance to
give someone back his life. We don’t make them a little better.
We make them all the way better. It’s an easy thing to feel
good about.”
Something most people don’t know about me: “I worked
my way through medical school as a carpenter. I built
furniture and my first house. It almost killed me, but I did it.
I’m also a small engine mechanic and I love to fix things.”
When the family is not boating, the Tishko boys are right at
home working alongside their dad on the late-model Mustang
in the garage. “I love engines,” Tishko said. “The louder

Tishko he had done 40 in the

his own article explaining the
procedure and the two later
met at a conference. “You
are Dr. Rocco,” Tishko said.
“And you are Dr. Tishko,” Dr.
Rocco replied. They traded
notes. “I like learning,” Tishko
said. “It’s an occupational
hazard. We know everything
and sometimes we assume
everyone else knows it, too. A lot of good medicine comes
from when doctors talk to each other.”
It is not over just yet when cancer is removed. “It is not
good enough to just carve it out,” Tishko said. “We have
to look at the size and study to see if cancer has spread to
the lymph nodes. Every year in the United States 180,000
people die from lung cancer, 12 times the number from AIDS,
five times the number from car accidents and 10 times the
number of people murdered. We have the opportunity to get
the message out. We have hope, something to offer — outstanding
therapy to actually cure these people. We are changing
When Tishko, his wife and their four sons moved to Florida
they realized that they had lost an attic and a basement, so
they built suspended shelves in the garage. “I love fixing
things. In a perfect world, my house would be life support for
the garage and my stereo,” said Tishko, who calls himself a
fanatical audiophile.
