Treasure Coast Medical Report
HOSPITALS
aside by pioneer homesteader Otto Stypmann for the public when
he subdivided his land in 1914, was deeded to the Martin County
Hospital Association.
The architect Henry Course, of New York and Hobe Sound,
donated his services. The Barstows directed him to design a
nurses’ residence in addition to the hospital to help attract qualified
nurses. The original plans also included a dental clinic to serve
both white and black patients. Ultimately, segregated facilities
were designed with private rooms, semi-private rooms and wards
for whites and wards for blacks.

William and Francoise Barstow, winter residents of Jupiter Island,
paid for the construction of the original Martin County Hospital.
William Barstow, an electrical engineer and inventor, was a close
associate and lifelong friend of Thomas Alva Edison. Early in his
career he invested in public utilities but upon the advice of his wife
liquidated before the disastrous crash of 1929.
