used to grow crops.

“The pier has a lot of character,” said Roland DeBlois, the
county’s chief environmental planner. “It’s got a fairly iconic
Key West shed on the dock. It’s part of the aesthetic that
we’re trying to preserve as well.”
Jones said the original dock, built early in the 20th century,
was anchored to the trunks of cabbage palms. He said
saltwater termites eventually ate their way through those
pilings. They also feasted on wooden boats in that pre-
Fiberglass era. He said he built later docks using PVC pilings
reinforced with concrete and steel. >>
