MARTIN HEALTH SYSTEM
John Scott began working at Martin County Hospital in 1939 and remained
for 73 years until shortly before his death in 2012.
As long as their service was, the tenures of Cromwell,
Harman and Robitaille could not compare with that of the
late John Scott. He was one of the hospital’s first employees.
Beginning as a gardener, he was soon recruited to work
inside. For a time he lived in the basement and was on call 24
hours a day. As an orderly he ministered to patients’ most intimate
needs and became the right-hand man for overworked
doctors and registered nurses. In 1959, he was encouraged
to become a practical nurse and became certified to do the
work he had been performing for years. He saw the barriers
of segregation lifted and became the generally beloved “Man
on the Martin Memorial Campus.” He also helped transport
patients, and in his last years he appeared daily in the
Hospital Records Department. In 2004, the John Scott Healing
Garden was dedicated to commemorate his then-unprecedented
65 years of service. It is nestled behind the Robert &
Carol Weissman Cancer Center near the hospital, where Scott
continued to report for work until shortly before his death in
2012. He had worked for the hospital for 73 years.
