NEED A RIDE?
For information on taking advantage of this free service
for Indian River County residents, visit the Web site,
www.ridevas.org or call 772.231.1230. Volunteers are
needed throughout the year. Hargett says, “We look for
considerate, caring people who are good, safe drivers.”
Note that there are opportunities to serve for those who do
not drive.
Tax-deductible donations may be mailed to Indian River
County Volunteer Ambulance Squad, P. O. Box 2240,
Vero Beach, FL 32961.
of love for the volunteers. Both the squad members and the
riders they serve sing the praises of April Hargett, the office
administrator, who keeps track of everyone and their needs.
The huge corkboard beside her desk is filled with columns
and rows of sticky notes and Hargett can pick out the one she
needs without thinking twice.
Helen Paltell, a 90-year-old Vero Beach resident who has
been a passenger at least once a week for five years, calls
Hargett “a godsend. I’ve never met her, but I call her an angel.
She’ll rearrange the schedules to accommodate me and says
she’ll have someone pick me up.” And they do, right on time.

April Hargett, called “an angel” by one of IRVAS’ clients, keeps track of every
passenger and volunteer with just a bulletin board and a pad of sticky notes.
