Fort Pierce-born musician
blends Celtic and bluegrass
as member of regional band
The first time Brian Trew watched the
four musicians who would become his
future bandmates play in a Boca Raton
bar, his mouth was wired shut. But that
didn’t stop Trew, who had hurt his face playing
rugby, from grabbing his fiddle and jumping on
stage to join them. The evening turned out to be
the first unofficial performance of Uproot Hootenanny,
a unique Celtic bluegrass band from
South Florida.

For anyone who knows Trew, this kind of
unabashed energy is typical of the 27-year-old
Fort Pierce native, who says he remembers this
evening seven years ago very well, as he’s often
reminded of it by his band members. “They
constantly say they liked me better with my jaw
wired shut,” Trew said.
Trew began his musical career at Lincoln Park
Academy in Fort Pierce, where he grew up. He
