THOMAS WINTER
You’re often sure to encounter wildlife as you drive on the Martin Grade, one of Florida’s most scenic roadways
and just a half hour west of Stuart.
We all have that experience when we’re away from home, maybe lost on a side
road and hit a stretch of road so beautiful it remains in our subconscious for
years. Donna Crary takes us to such a place in Oak Highway Page 12. A
drive on the Martin Grade is unlike any you’ve ever taken and one you are
sure to remember. Janie Gould takes us on another tour of Old Florida with a visit to Jones
Pier in Vero Beach Page 22, where pioneer Seaborn Jones scratched out a living farming
and mullet fishing.
Also in Indian River County, Siobhan Fitzpatrick Austin takes you inside the Vero Shores
home Page 28 of Anita Astrachan, generous hostess to parties benefiting the Riverside
Theatre.
Siobhan also explores the musical roots Page 44 of Fort Pierce-born Brian Trew, a member
of Uproot Hottenanny, a band known for its unique blend of Celtic and bluegrass music.
Christina Tascon recounts the exciting summer a Vero Beach college student Page 48
spent interning at O, The Oprah Magazine in New York. Catherine Enns Grigas gives us a
taste of the District Table & Bar in Stuart Page 52, which plays up fresh local ingredients
in a creative way.
In our Treasure Coast Medical Report Page 57, Sandra Thurlow takes a look back on
the founding 75 years ago of what has become the Martin Health System. Greg Gardner
explores robotic surgery at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center and Heart Institute that
eases the pain of spinal surgery Page 64.
We hope you like these offerings as we begin another exciting season bringing you the
best the region has to offer.
