Zora Neale Hurston Memorial Dedication 1
Warm weather and blue skies welcomed the dedication ceremony for
the Zora Neale Hurston sculpture created by artist James Liccione near her
gravesite in Fort Pierce. Hurston, who lived her last years in Fort Pierce,
wrote the celebrated “Their Eyes Were Watching God.’’ Her gravesite was
unmarked until fellow writer Alice Walker discovered it in 1973. The sculpture
given by Jon Ward and the invocation was given by the Rev. Toby Philpart.
IRSC’s Steven Knapp spoke of Zora’s life and her last days in Fort Pierce.
Music was provided by Community Youth Outreach Program.
