FOR ART’S SAKE
Towns throughout the Treasure Coast are
hosting monthly art gatherings

The name varies from county to county, but the
goal is the same: bringing people and art together.
Geographically, that goal can present a challenge.
Martin County has its First Thursday Gallery
Nights, begun in 2006 by The Arts Council, under
the direction of Nancy K. Turrell. More than 20 galleries
participate, but those galleries stretch from Hobe Sound to
Jensen Beach, so many Martin County art lovers choose to
visit just a few galleries each month.
Steve Binder, co-owner with his wife, Becky, of Rare Earth
Gallery in Stuart, sees First Thursday Gallery Night as a winwin
win-win event. “For the community: It increases awareness
of the arts, the types of art and the names of the artists
available in their local galleries. For galleries: It reinforces the
commitment (of the galleries) to the Martin Arts Council. It
