Although two will be under construction,
the Treasure Coast’s major museums have a

full slate of shows for the season

The thermometer may be dipping a few degrees,
but this is the time when the Treasure Coast
arts scene heats up. Area museums are
planning a number of major exhibitions,
and two institutions are
looking at more than a few major changes.
Both the Elliott Museum and the
A.E. Backus Museum and Gallery
will be breaking ground for new facilities
in 2011. The Elliott Museum,
which will celebrate its 50th year in
2011, will be razed at the end of the
season in order to begin construction
on a new, state-of-the-art facility
with expanded exhibition space and
some exciting additions. The House of
Refuge will celebrate its 135th anniversary
on March 10.
The A.E. Backus Museum and Gallery
plans expansion and renovation, including the
addition of a new two-story gallery wing.
Meanwhile, the Vero Beach Museum of Art, celebrating its
25th anniversary, promises a number of exhibitions, including
abstract works by Colombian-born artist Federico Uribe
and “American Masterworks,” a stellar collection of work by
American artists from the Butler Institute of American Art.
Here is what’s ahead this season on the museum scene:
VERO BEACH MUSEUM OF ART
The Vero Beach Museum of Art takes an expansive look at
artists, sculptors and collectors for its upcoming season.
Its exhibitions include:
CLEARLY COLOR: Glass from the Permanent
Collection
Continues through Jan. 2, 2011
Clearly Color offers a dazzling
cross section of American glass artists
whose works are a study in contrast.
Beginning with Dominick Labino
and Harvey Littleton, known as the
father of the Studio Glass movement,
the exhibition examines the discipline
through works that celebrate
the medium and material itself, as well
as showcases the revival and innovation
of traditional techniques. The works
in the exhibition also illustrate a variety of
glass-forming technologies beyond traditional
glassblowing. Clearly Color features 10 glass pieces
and includes artists such as Dale Chihuly, Benjamin Moore,
Dante Marioni, Therman Statom, and Marc Petrovic.
METAMORPHOSIS: Abstract Works by Federico Uribe
