TREASURE COAST BOATING
of the year in Palm City.
No stranger to the boat-building business, Sadowsky
built five 50- to 63-foot carbon fiber sportfishing boats from
1990-1993. They are still in use today. Two years ago at the
Custom Shootout in the Abacos, Bahamas, the Reel Joy from
New Jersey, a carbon fiber boat built by Sadowsky, beat out
30 boats in a Bimini start as seen in a video where the losers
could only shake their heads. “I know they (Reel Joy) had
more (power), but you never let them know how much you
have,” he says.
Sadowsky spent 14 years designing naval special warfare systems
for the U.S. Special Operations Command. He says some
of his designs and systems will be standard on Outlier Yachts.
Not surprisingly, Sadowsky’s business plan calls for hiring
returning veterans. “There’s the feel-good thing,” he says.
“But I have a very good reason from a business standpoint.
I have been working with military people for a long time.
These are guys who know about teamwork. Their lives depend
on it. They all come back with technical skills.”
“(Veterans) come back with good work ethics and show up
on time and take direction well,” says Michael Corbit, director
of employee and community relations at Career Source
Research Coast. “When he (Sadowsky) gives us the go-ahead
we will be building a pipeline for veteran applicants.”
It will take eight or nine months to turn out the first boat.
Tooling will take six months. Sadowsky envisions 35 employees
by the third year. Many workers will be trained to work
specifically with carbon fiber boat construction.
“I talked to a lot of dissatisfied boat captains,” says Sadowsky.
“The boating industry is not built on innovation. There
is no flexibility. We took back the engine room space, changed
the center of gravity with the heavier motors and we have a
light, fast boat. Wives love to have more interior space for a
full-sized head. The gyro system takes away the threat of seasickness.
And since the noise and the vibration are gone from
the salon it gives owners a higher level of user experience.”
Outlier’s 48-foot model can be configured as a centerconsole
fishing boat, a sportfishing boat with tower, a yacht
tender for a mega-yacht, an opened/closed cruiser or an
enclosed cruiser. The name “Outlier” is a literary reference to
a theory of being outside the bell curve or the norm.
The boats of the future will fit that description.
