DESIGN
Having several outdoor conversation areas is essential for entertaining.
“You can sit there and have a cocktail while somebody else is dining at the
table and the chef is cooking at the summer kitchen,” says Gail Williams
of Sunshine Furniture.
“People think in a garden nothing clashes,” Flaugh says.
“But using fewer colors correctly is more impactful.”
DETAILS ARE IMPORTANT
Little things, big difference. Outdoor curtains can bring
warmth and a cozy vibe to a covered patio. Complimentary
potted plants can make it seem welcoming and cohesive.
Thoughtfully selected trees and shrubs can create privacy
and a shady area to relax on sunny afternoons. Matching pavers
around the pool and patio can make everything flow together.

Water features can encourage relaxation, and outdoor
lighting can create a space that can be utilized any time of the
day or night.
“Details matter,” says Giunta.
NOT EASY BEING GREEN
“More mistakes are made with landscaping than anything
else you can think of,” Flaugh says.
So don’t forget about it when designing your space. Trees
and large plants can create shade, block out noise and nosy
neighbors and create the illusion of a secluded oasis while
smaller plants can add color and life. Choose wisely, though.
Too many different kinds and your space will lack impact.
Keep size in mind, too. That royal palm may look great
now, but in a few years when it’s towering at its mature
height and shedding heavy fronds, you may not want it
looming over your pool.
Selecting plants that don’t require large amounts of fertilizer
or water can also help with conservation and local water
quality, not to mention saving you money.
EASY MAINTENANCE
“It’s all well and good to have something beautiful outside
until the elements take their toll,” Dalton says.
It’s important to select materials that have been tried and
tested and can handle harsh Florida elements.
No one enjoys more cleaning and maintenance than is
absolutely necessary.
Ensure that cushions, decorations, umbrellas and fabrics are
durable and made for the outdoors. You want them to last, but
they shouldn’t require constant attention. Select plants that
don’t litter the yard with seeds, berries or flowers.
