Treasure Coast Casters, an organization dedicated to educating
children about fishing and conservation. “The majority
of people have never seen this kind of environment with
mangroves and seagrasses,” he says. I enjoy watching people
catch fish. They get excited about catching fish they have
never seen before. I had an 8-year-old who pulled in a 29-inch
trout and got him into the boat. It was neat to see this kid
say, ‘Let him go.’ Every trip there is something memorable. I
had a lady in her 80s. She loves to fish. She caught a 30-inch
redfish. I thought it was going to pull her out of the boat. She
just wouldn’t let go.”
For a 7 a.m charter Conner is up at 4:30. “It is a lot more
than people realize,” he says. “I get a lot of novices on the
boat and I cast for them. It is part of the job. Some days you
make all the casts. It’s challenging when the water is cold.
Water temperature is a big factor and 68 degrees is the magic
number. Below that you really have to move around to find
fish bites for people.”
Drew Swedlund has fished all over North America, but he
has flown here six times from Texas to charter a fishing boat
in the Indian River Lagoon with his father Larry. “We’ve had
good experiences here,” he says. “You look for someone who
knows the area and will make good use of your time. The local
guys teach you — the techniques, the bait, and the habitat
after we tell them what we want to fish for. I plan my trips
when Charlie (Fornabio) tells me what fish are biting.”
The Swedlunds set out on a cool, windy morning on the
Indian River with the goal of catching snook. And they did,
two small ones, yet another species for the personal record
book. “We always catch and release,” says Drew Swedlund.
“Take a picture and throw it back. People who pay for a
guide care about conservation. They are anglers who believe
in the preservation of the sport.”

Ross Edrich couldn’t be more happy with his 29-inch sea trout he caught
on captain Charlie Conner’s boat Fish Tales. The boy insisted on throwing
the tasty and legal fish back into the river to swim again.
