While that same well-designed space
can bring both joy and relaxation, a poorly
designed space can do just the opposite.

City and Stuart landscape architect Mike
Flaugh say a plan is essential. Transforming
a backyard or patio might seem easy, but it
takes planning and forethought to create a
space that a family will really love — and
really use.
START WITH A PLAN
Before you buy a piece of furniture or a potted

plant, Dalton and Giunta suggest you start
by deciding how you will use your outdoor
living space. Do you want a pool, an extra
dining room or simply an area for lounging
and relaxation?
“You need to think about how you live
and what things are important to you when
designing an outdoor space,” Giunta says.
“Ask ‘What am I trying to accomplish
here?’ ” Flaugh says.
Once there is a plan and a design that
stresses optimum functionality, you can move
forward with confidence.
