DESIGN
designs and furniture they like that will compliment the
indoor space.
“Always remember that an outdoor space is just an extension
30
of your indoor space so try to keep the same styles and
colors flowing from inside,’’ says Williams. “Don’t forget
things like outdoor rugs, pillows, drapery and artwork. Large
umbrellas are really popular, so remember you can make a
sunny area usable shaded space.
DESIGN WITH SPACE IN MIND
That chaise lounge or patio table you love may look stunning
on the showroom floor, but if you haven’t allocated
space for large pieces of furniture, making them fit into an
area that’s too big or too small may not create the relaxing
oasis you dreamed of.
If the space is small, scale everything down so there is
room to move about. If the space is large, fill it with furniture
or plants so it won’t look too cluttered or too sparse.
CONVENIENCE IS KEY
To regular use, that is. If you want an outdoor kitchen perfect
for entertaining family and friends but neglect to address
easy access from your indoor kitchen, getting that tray of
raw meat and hors d’oeuvres from the fridge to the yard may
become too much of a hassle to bother with, leaving your
beautiful space underutilized. Place your space where it is
easily accessible and where there will be the fewest obstacles
between you and outdoor enjoyment.
BE STYLE-SAVVY
“Trying to incorporate the style of your home to the outdoor
space is important,” Giunta says.
“It creates a seamless aesthetic,” Flaugh says.
Modern, contemporary, classic. Whatever style defines the
rest of your home, use it for your outdoor living space. You
want it to be an extension of your indoor space, not an exterior
afterthought.
COLOR IS KING
Create a visual extension by using colors, patterns and materials
that coordinate and compliment what’s going on inside.
“I love using color,” Dalton says. “You can make such a
dramatic change just by changing the paint color.”
Color can set the mood for a space, so choose wisely. Use
bright colors for lively, fun spaces and deeper tones for areas
meant for taking it easy. In order to create a cohesive space,
make sure everything coordinates.
The same goes for plants. >>
