on the Research Coast,” Arnold says. “The research
companies like Torrey Pines Institute for
Molecular Studies and the Vaccine and Gene
Therapy Institute are just down the road from
us. The skills our students are learning are in
high demand by these cutting-edge firms.”
Adam Carroll interned at Torrey Pines,
worked there all summer and then was hired
as a part-time lab assistant. “I really enjoyed
it,” he says. “We are learning how to apply
what we learn in school to the real world.”
Indian River State College has always been
about providing a solid education for students
in the four-county area it serves, preparing
them to either continue at a four-year school or
to move into jobs and careers.
At the same time, the college helps attract
new firms to the area known as the Treasure
Coast but called the Research Coast by people
who want to build a research community here.
These research companies are going to need a
skilled work force to draw from. The college
has become proactive in building a community,
Dr. Massey says.
