W. Martin won a landslide
victory to become
mayor of Jacksonville,
the movie people got

up stakes and headed
for California.
In 1925, that selfsame

the financial benefits of
embracing movie-making

Library of Congress
as Jacksonville’s mayor, John W. Martin

florida’s governor, he wanted it back in
Martin County.
many politicians, Martin
preferred the smooth
roads of expedience to bumpy backward trails of principle.

movie star were business partners in a brand new venture
