MUSEUMS
Once in the main door, a turn to the left takes a visitor
to the museum store, with an inventory that reflects the
spirit of innovation the museum celebrates. Store manager
Wendy Lund has put together a selection of local arts and
crafts, baseball and car collectibles, books on regional history
and creative toys and books for children. Lisa Djahed, who
coordinates marketing for the Elliott, says, “We hope many
people, when they first visit the new Elliott Museum, will be
surprised at the scale and thought that went into making this
a place of learning. We hope that feeling is reflected when
they visit our museum store, that they will be awed by our local
artists, excited by the learning opportunities, and nostalgic
about the items that reflect our shared history.”
SALUTE TO FLIGHT
Inside the entrance, to the right, a replica of Leonardo daVinci’s
flying machine, part of the opening exhibit, is suspended
from the two-story atrium’s ceiling. In the Main Street Gallery,
a celebration of Stuart’s early years, hangs another flying
machine, a replica of the 1910 Hydro-Aeroplane of Stuart
resident Hugh Willoughby. The Pelican replica was painstakingly
40
constructed by Ken Kellett, who built — and flew — the
first flightworthy replica of the Wright brothers’ 1903 Flyer.
Entertainer Frances Langford played an important role in
the history of Martin County and the restaurant she and her
husband Ralph Evinrude opened in 1961 will have a place
in the new Elliott Museum. The Frances Langford Cafe was
inspired by the couple’s Outrigger Resort and Restaurant,
