A museum for the new century
A half century ago, the Elliott Museum in Stuart was noted mostly for its huge
display of vintage cars collected by founder Harmon Elliott.
Harmon created the museum on Hutchinson Island as a memorial to his
father, the inventor Sterling Elliott. Though Harmon intended it to be a museum
dedicated to the evolution of vehicular transportation, he turned it over to the Historical
Society of Martin County and eventually bought into the wider notion of making it a
museum for art and antiques as well.
What evolved was a multi-functional building that housed the automobile collection,
an art museum and studio for community artists, exhibits of Sterling Elliott’s inventions, a
tribute to the singer and actress Frances Langford and multiple early 20th century replicas
of Main Street institutions such as a soda shop, a pharmacy, a bike shop and a general store.
The museum even grew to house a collection of antique toys and the largest collection of
signed Baseball Hall of Fame memorabilia outside of Cooperstown, N.Y.
As the 21st century approached, it became clear that the museum with the large mission
had outgrown the original building, and a capital campaign was begun. The old building
was razed in 2010 and a new 48,000 square-foot, $20 million museum arose in it place.
The new landmark Elliott is both a tribute to the spirit of Harmon and Sterling and a testament
to the generosity of the people and institutions of Martin County, who wisely value
the region’s history.
