Henry Morrison Flagler (1830-1913) brought the railroad through the Treasure Coast, which speeded
the development of the region’s pineapple industry. In 1910, a major newspaper called Flagler
Florida’s “boss” and claimed he owned the state “body and soul.”

Grover Cleveland was the 22nd president (1885-1889) and the 24th President (1893-
1897) making him the only U.S. president to serve two nonconsecutive terms. This
photo was taken in 1903, one of many years he wintered in Stuart.
A fondness for Stuart’s fishing and its folks
drew the former president repeatedly to
proclaimed as “the bravest woman alive.”
