west, and empty storefronts along with peeling paint gave
it the feel of a near ghost town.
Today, more than 80 businesses are thriving, pushing
their way past the tough times brought on by three hurricanes
in two years followed by a major economic recession.
Through it all, Main Street Fort Pierce, now 24 years old,
never gave up.
DREAMS TO BUILD ON
People like Patricia Scott at Whimsy and Dale van der
Lugt at Sentiment are fulfilling long-held dreams in their
retail shops. Long-timers like Karen Kane of Karen Kane
Interiors, who started downtown, moved west and then
returned, have stuck it out and now draw people from a
wide geographic area.
The restored 1923 Sunrise Theatre sells out some of its
shows, filling 1,221 seats for nationally renowned acts.
Tillman’s enthusiasm brought the non-profit group national
fame last year, when it was one of five winners of the

Joey Miller, center, began St. Lucie Battery & Tire nearly 40 years ago as a side business
to his farm stand on Orange Avenue Extension in Fort Pierce. Folks could get tires and
batteries when they stopped for their eggs and milk. Today, with sons Doug, left, and
Mickey, right, Miller oversees nine St. Lucie Battery and Tire stores on the Treasure
Coast, stretching from Sebastian to Hobe Sound. You might not be able to pick up eggs
and milk when you visit one of his stores today, but you’ll feel like family.
