“Felix Poppell was the first property appraiser in St. Lucie
County,” says Speedy. “The house was last lived in by Calvin
‘Sox’ Poppell. It had a big front porch just like most of the Florida
Cracker houses.” The building fell into decay but was later
revamped. “Everyone that comes in loves the building,” says
DeRoss. Many of the rooms are now adorned by artwork from
the likes of local artists Rick Kelly and Colleen Nash Becht.
“The potential of the new Federal Court House was one of
the reasons that we invested here,” Speedy says. It sounds as
if the Fees will be practicing law in Fort Pierce for some time
to come.
The Fee law firm’s conference room is a virtual 107-year chronology of the
firm’s history in Fort Pierce.
