says he doesn’t think the federal courthouse has brought his
restaurants any business yet, but added that it would be easier
to tell in the summer when the seasonal visitors have left.
Still, business owners acknowledge that as time goes on,
the courthouse will both add to the city’s economic base with
new businesses moving in on the west side of U.S. 1, and
increase sales at existing businesses in downtown Fort Pierce.
“Even though there were years of delays and postponements
in getting this courthouse, it ended up that it came at
a very good time for us,” Benton says. “It put local people to
work on construction, though not as many as I would have
liked, and it is going to help us move forward with rebuilding
our economy. I think I can speak for all of us when I say
that we are very, very pleased.”
