Judge Adams works cattle at his ranch. Adams’ son, Alto Jr., developed the Braford
breed of cattle.
“He wasn’t exactly a cowboy, and people said, ‘You bought
all these cows. Do you know where they are?’ He said, ‘I know
exactly where they are: somewhere between Fort Lauderdale and
Daytona Beach.’ ”
On the legal front, Adams earned an exemplary reputation
and was named judge for the St. Lucie County Circuit Court. In
1940, when an addition was made to the number of state Supreme
Court justices, Gov. Fred P. Cone appointed Adams to the seat. He
was the first University of Florida graduate named to the Supreme
Court. He served as justice from 1940 until 1951 and as chief justice
from 1949-1951.
