The Florida Supreme Court in session in 1947. Judge Adams is second
from right.
Bud, also a University of Florida graduate, was responsible
for crossbreeding Brahman and Hereford cows to get
the Braford breed, which proved better able to tolerate the
Florida climate. He remains active in the operation of the
ranch today.
“The way I’ve heard it, my granddad wanted to get back
to his roots, to get out of town and ride horses and be in the
fresh air,” said Alto’s grandson, Robert Adams, who is now
head of the ranch’s citrus operations. At the time of the ranch
acquisition, Florida’s cattle were raised on the free range —
without fences — and were identified by their brands.
