nal recommendations, Williams says. “At a second meeting,
the committee engages in further discussion and voting to
determine the final list (for) the Athena Society ballot.” Those
pieces are then shipped to Vero Beach for viewing a week before
the selection dinner. A packet of materials is delivered to
each member before the vote, which can be by proxy if someone’s
schedule doesn’t allow for attendance at the dinner.
The Athena Society was formed in 2003, the result of a
discussion within the collection committee, which, until then,
was charged with raising funds for acquiring new works of
art. The new group was modeled after the Apollo Society at
the Toledo Museum and the Rungus Society at the National
Museum of Wildlife Art, Gedeon explains. Before then,
“Works were mostly acquired by gift. Some purchases were
made from the small acquisition endowment or, when a special
opportunity for a major work came our way, people were
asked to contribute toward the purchase. This is still the case,
in addition to the Athena Society.”
