BEST OF THE TREASURE COAST
‘‘ ‘‘ With so many food-insecure families, it’s amazing how tirelessly the staff at the Treasure
Coast Food Bank works to get food out to all four counties on the Treasure Coast each
and every day. Low on funds and volunteers year round they strive everyday to meet
the needs of our neighbors in all communities on the Treasure Coast.

The Treasure Coast Food Bank serves thousands
of people each year in Martin, St. Lucie, Indian
River and Okeechobee counties. The food bank
tells us that “more than 97,640 people on the
Treasure Coast are food-insecure, meaning they don’t
know where their next meal is coming from. ” The food
bank collects food and donations from the community,
with 97 cents out of every donated dollar going to
food, and 3 cents to administration. Food is distributed
to hungry families and individuals in need. It also feeds
1,000 children a week through the “backpack program”
in cooperation with schools and social services
organizations. For anyone curious how a food bank
collects, stores and distributes food, it offers Food For
Thought tours on the last Friday of each month. The
website makes it easy to donate for specific foods –
for example, $25 for 21 jars of peanut butter or 108
servings of oatmeal or $100 for a cart full of groceries.
It’s called a “virtual food drive.” For its warm and caring
heart, and its tremendous contribution to alleviating
hunger, the Treasure Coast Food Bank wins in the Best
Nonprofit category this year.
WHAT R E A D E R S S AY
‘‘ ‘‘ Without the Treasure Coast Food Bank, residents who are struggling to make
ends meet would not have a hot meal to eat, or groceries in their home. The
mission is great and the staff works extremely hard to help those in need.
