The popular Environmental Learning Center
on Wabasso Island is the winner of the Best
Eco-Adventure category. Children love it for the
145-gallon touch-tank where they can be handson
with marine creatures and the many programs
available. Families and adults love the floating
classroom aboard a pontoon boat, and all ages enjoy
the canoe excursions. This year’s theme is “Behavior
Changes,” featuring ways every person can help to
improve the health of the Indian River Lagoon. Visitors
can learn to appreciate the lagoon by taking a guided
canoe trip to places off the beaten path where they’ll
find water birds hunting their next meal, spot some
mangrove tree crabs, and maybe see a playful dolphin
or a manatee with her calf swimming alongside. The
4- to 8-year-old youngsters can enjoy story time on
Saturdays at the Imagination Station. The ELC has loads
of enthusiastic volunteers who help out every day and
say the center is a very special place and very dear to
their hearts. Every day at the Environmental Learning
Center is filled with eco-adventures, its staff and
volunteers say, earning it the top place in our
eco-adventure category. WHAT R E A D E R S

Great kayak tours, nice exhibits, good setting. Great for
kids. They work to promote and protect our lagoon.
