Bright spot
The Treasure Coast doesn’t have snow to look forward to, but Heathcote Botanical Gardens in Fort Pierce provides a winter wonderland with the annual Garden of Lights, now celebrating its 10th year.
Local boat parades light up the waters for the holidays on Saturday, Dec. 9, about 6 p.m. in St. Lucie County along the Fort Pierce Inlet. View the parade from the Veterans Memorial Park, South Bridge, Causeway Park, or anywhere along the north side of South Hutchinson Island. Boats turn at the Square Grouper and go back. In Indian River and Martin counties the parades are on Saturday, Dec. 16. The Indian River County parade starts at 6 p.m. just north of the Merrill Barber bridge and follows the same route south on the Indian River as it did in previous years. The Martin County boat parade starts at 6:30 p.m. at the downtown Stuart public docks and proceeds down the St. Lucie River to Manatee Pocket. The judging takes place at Sandsprit Park. The Enns family’s journey in America started in Kansas in 1879 and spread to Florida in 1923. Seen here in 1905 are seven of the nine Enns brothers. Enns of an era
They traveled from the valleys of Prussia to the steppes of Russia, the wheat fields of Kansas and, finally, to the citrus rows of Florida. The precise reason for the Enns family’s move to Florida is lost to the memories of those who have long since passed, but it resulted in the creation of a citrus grove, construction of a development called Maravilla and the purchase of the local newspaper.
This oil on canvas by A.E. Backus, Orange Grove, will be on display as part of the upcoming exhibit titled Kindred Spirits: Paintings and Letters from the Kiplinger Family Collection. The exhibit runs from Nov. 17 through Jan. 7 at the A.E. Backus Museum and Gallery in Fort Pierce. BRIAN GILLIGAN
