toymaker’s practiced hands hew models of roadsters and triwinged
planes.
His ladder trucks and road scrapers and farm tractors
come ready for their intended work: play.
The toys are not just for boys, however. There are longbodied
dachshunds with floppy ears whose backs are drilled
with holes to hold crayons. And Reynolds’ favorite projects
are the houses, all of which have hardwood floors, and
doors that open and close, and roofs with individually hewn
shingles glued in place “one shingle at a time.”
“I just finished the general store about five months ago,”
he says. “I started it 15 years ago.”
Of course, in the meantime, he’s made nearly 3,000 other
toys, most of which he sells at craft shows. He is a member
of the Craft Club of Sebastian, whose next show at Riverview
Park is set for Dec. 5-6.
Ken Reynolds will be there with his wonderland of toys
displayed, just in time for winter residents looking for Christmas
presents.
“The snowbirds are good buyers,” he says.
John Donlon, superintendent of the St. Lucie County Regional
History Center, met Reynolds about three years ago,
shortly after the death of Reynolds’ Mary Ann, his soulmate
of 62 years.
“He had some memorabilia from World War II that he
wanted to donate to the museum, and we became friends,”
Donlon says. “He’s such a wonderful guy — and a bona fide
hero at that.”
