ATTRACTIONS
the institute’s scientists and
staff are dedicated to not only
discovery but also to using
ocean science to improve the
quality of life in the world.
For three decades, Harbor
Branch’s campus was open to
the public. It was an exciting
place for visitors to observe
ocean research in action.
Volunteers conducted campus
tours to a packed audience
several times a day. Unfortunately,
34
the tragic events of
Sept. 11, 2001, changed all of
that. With the threat of terrorism,
Harbor Branch established
a strict security protocol
and shut the campus off from
the general public.
For years, Harbor Branch
was funded by grants and contributions
from Seward Johnson’s
estate, but that source
came to an end. Coupled with
property destruction by hurricanes
Frances and Jean, the
loss put Harbor Branch in
dire straits.
The situation became so
desperate that in 2004, the
Dr. Jim Masterson, the Ocean Discovery Center director, began his career at Harbor Branch as a summer intern
in 1993. Masterson and a team of designers create displays to showcase the ongoing research and conservation
efforts of Harbor Branch and to give visitors a close-up look at the emerging technologies used by the marine
>> research community.

“I’ve belonged to other clubs since moving to the Treasure Coast in 1986,
but I’ve been playing at the Edward G. Enns Indian Hills Golf Course since
it reopened in 2003. I like the layout and the greens fees are very reasonable.
The staff is tremendous — everyone from the cart man to the people in the pro
shop. And you can’t beat the friends you make here.
