institute’s board of
directors considered
selling some 540 acres
of its riverfront property
to a condominium
developer. On the
same day the Harbor
Branch board was to
have heard a final plan
from the developers,
Ken Pruitt, president of
the Florida Senate, and
Frank Brogan, president
of Florida Atlantic
University (FAU),
unveiled a surprise
plan to make Harbor
Branch a part of FAU.
The Legislature passed
their bill and gave Harbor Branch $44.7 million to repair and
rebuild damaged buildings and another $8.5 million a year to
fund its operations.
In 2006, FAU opened the FAU/Harbor Branch Marine
Sciences Building — a 40,000-square-foot, joint-use facility
that houses specially equipped marine science labs, classrooms
and video-conferencing-equipped meeting rooms. The
building provides students with undergraduate and graduate
degree opportunities, offering classes in marine biology,
marine science, marine biotechnology, natural resources and
environmental education. It also housed the Torrey Pines Institute
for Molecular Studies while its facility was being built
in Port St. Lucie.
Through concerted efforts, the Protect Wild Dolphins Florida specialty
license plate was introduced in 1999. Designed by Vero Beach artist Steve
Diossy, money donated for the environmental specialty plate goes to Harbor
Branch and other organizations that conduct dolphin research and conservation
activities.
