The Wynne Black Box Theatre at Indian River State College is used for
everything from dinner theater to small plays and musicals.
The black box also allows the theater to run two shows at the
same time.
“We can have the B-52s and a comedy show on the same
night,” he says.
Originally, plans called for the space to be used as a restaurant.
But a public-funded did not sit well with downtown
merchants. With a rental fee of $600 per night, the new room
should be popular with promoters who might have a tough
time filling the seats of the main theater. “Trying to rent the
Sunrise Theatre is a daunting challenge, to sell 1,200 seats,”
says Darryl Bey, owner of Blue Bird Productions and veteran
promoter of more than 100 shows “It gives a small promoter
an opportunity,” Bey says. “I could use the black box to build
an audience and one day sell out the Sunrise Theatre.”
In an age of economic downsizing, smaller expenses allow
the theater and promoters to generally offer tickets at
lower prices.
”It’s hard to crank up a 1,200-seat theater with 300 people,”
