The Deep Diver submersible built in the 1960s was a predecessor to the Johnson-Sea-Link
submersibles that have been in almost 9,000 science and exploration dives.
dolphins are bellwethers of the health of
the lagoon, the most biodiverse estuary in
North America. “We catch 30-40 dolphins
each year for a medical exam,” McCulloch
explains, and they are not as healthy as they
might seem. “Mercury levels are 21 percent
higher than the Environmental Protection
Agency considers safe. Dolphins have developed
immunity to antibiotics, and now
we have the spread of new, emerging diseases,
seen only in humans and dolphins.”
The marine mammal critical care and triage
center was built around the Johnson home
and swimming pool 20 years ago and was redesigned
after hurricane damage, McCulloch
says. “It’s the heart and soul of the program.
In a normal Olympic-size pool, 100,000 gallons
of water are turned over every 6-8 hours.
When you have a sick or injured dolphin
with open wounds, you have to turn the
water over every 90 minutes. It’s a healthy
environment for dolphins.”
McCulloch says the addition of FAU has
brought a stronger emphasis on the integration
of academics, giving students access to
a wide range of scientific research programs
“and at the same time, allowing Harbor
Branch researchers access to those students
and next generation researchers at FAU.
Overall, these benefits to Harbor Branch and
FAU are immense.”
