is still going strong. The ship is now coeducational
welcoming boys and girls ages
13 – 21. Jerry Schmitt serves as the ship’s
skipper. Schmitt spent 30 years in the Navy
and retired as chief warrant officer - 4 - electronics.
Now, he divides his time between
the Sea Scouts and his job instructing people
from all over the world about marine surveying.
He is director of the Yacht and Small
Craft Survey School for Chapman’s School
of Seamanship in Stuart.
“Being the Sea Scout skipper has really
made a difference in my life,” says Schmitt.
“It’s changed my relationship with my
grandkids.” Schmitt explains that working
with kids on the water is a lot different than
