Five years ago, Megan Davis began a research program at
Harbor Branch aimed at developing an industry in Florida
that would cultivate natural pearls in queen conchs. “I’ve
been involved with queen conch for 30 years, growing it for
food, but have always been interested in growing pearls,”
says Davis, the institute’s associate executive director. She
and co-inventor Héctor Acosta-Salmón have developed a
process that successfully produces pearls in conch without
killing the animal. That technique allowed FAU to team up
with Rose Pearl, LLC, which serves as business partner and
licensee of the technology for the fledgling industry.
Late last year, the Florida Legislature, through the Florida
Technology, Research and Scholarship Board, granted the
