The Wakims’ newest product, hummus made from green garbanzo beans,
rolled out in Florida this April.
It will be introduced to the Florida market through a series
of tasting demos in stores, Carla says. “This product will be
the first of its kind in Florida and the entire U.S. market, and
we are proud of it.” She suggests eating the green garbanzo
hummus with chips, pita bread or vegetables and on sandwiches
or with fish and chicken.
Until a few years ago, garbanzo beans (also known as chick
peas) were found only on supermarket shelves with the other
canned beans and bags of dried legumes. With the introduction
of green garbanzo beans by innovative chefs in upscale
restaurants on the West Coast, a new audience has been created
for the beans in their green form. Picked and flash frozen
before their natural sugar turns to starch, the young beans are
available and in abundant supply yearlong for the Wakims’
newest product.
Everything produced at the Port St. Lucie plant is made
from scratch, Carla says, “and always prepared fresh and
shipped on a daily basis.” She and Roland believe in supporting
local businesses, buying most of their produce from
Nelson Family Farms in Fort Pierce.
With their current roster of 12 employees handling manufacturing,
sales and distribution, the couple spends long days
building their business. “We are constantly looking for new
tasty and healthy culinary ideas to add to our line,” Carla says.
“Our goal and hope is to watch our business grow even more.”
