Harbor Branch is attempting to establish commercial aquaculture of
Florida pompano.
Assistance Grant. Rose Pearl will match that $65,000 award
to build infrastructure, set up test marketing and develop
distribution channels for the pearls.
Kerri Malett, president of Rose Pearl, said in a press release,
“FAU will benefit through payment of royalties, the state will
profit through a sustainable, Florida-based industry which
will supply export and retail segments and create skilled jobs,
and Rose Pearl will join the ranks of ‘green’ businesses and
serve as an icon for Florida’s research coast, helping to attract
future investments.”
Possibly the most visible of Harbor Branch’s programs
was brought to the campus in 1997 by marine scientist Stephen
McCulloch, after his visit to the region to supervise the
reintroduction of dolphins Bogie and Bacall into their native
environment two years earlier. “It became evident then that
there were a lot of dolphins in the Indian River Lagoon, but
nobody knew anything about them,” McCulloch says.
The Marine Mammal Research and Conservation team
created at Harbor Branch responds to strandings of dolphins
and treatment of injuries and disease. The program also has
provided scientists with an opportunity to understand that >>
