At one point in &alifornia, the Santa Ana winds were
blowing about miles per hour and ocials closed
the roads as five tractortrailers had been blown over by
the winds.
7he cyclists had two near misses with vehicles and
had the biggest problems with retread tires on vehicles,
which would leave little metal bands on the road, causing

a few Áat tires. 7hey repaired the tires themselves
with a pump and patching supplies they had brought
with them.
7he hottest day, -erry says, was the last day. After arriving
in San 'iego, everyone Mumped on board the 59
and traveled up the 3acific &oast Highway to Sisters,
2regon. Leaving the 59 in storage, the family Áew
home to )lorida, returning later in the year to taNe the
59 across the northern states, eventually storing it in
5oanoNe, 9irginia, ready for the net adventure.
,t wasn·t long after this crosscountry Mourney that
-erry began planning another such ecursion, but this
one was to be by air, Áying their &essna from )ort
3ierce to AlasNa. 7his was another trip that tooN a lot of
planning. 0eeting &anadian Áying reTuirements meant
that someone on the plane had to have a restricted radio
operator·s permit, a thirdclass medical certificate in
&anada and proof of insurance in &anada. AlasNa and
&anada also reTuire travelers to pacN emergency gear,
including an ae, tent, sleeping bags, fishing tacNle and
a weeN·s worth of food per person. 3acNing was planned
very carefully due to the weight allotment for their plane.
