VICTORIAN FOCUS
Beginning )eb. , the museum·s galleries and special events
will be given over to Victorian Radicals: From the Pre-Raphaelites to
the Arts and Crafts Movement, organied by the American )ederation
of Arts and Birmingham 0useums 7rust. 7he worNs are
from the collection of the city of Birmingham, United .ingdom,
and many have never been ehibited outside the U..
Epanding on the 9ictorian theme, there will be two seminars
to go along with the ehibition. ,n )ebruary, 7amar 0arch will
lead a discussion on The Nature of Humor from the Victorians to
the Present. Eamples of humor and humorists will range from
&harles 'icNens to 'orothy 3arNer. 7im Barringer, chair, and
3aul 0ellon, professor in the 'epartment of the History of Art
at <ale University, will talN about The Victorian Avant-Garde:
Rethinking the Nineteenth Century in 0arch.
7he ,nternational Lecture Series adds to the 9ictorian
lineup with 'aisy *oodwin in 0arch. *oodwin is a novelist
and creator of Victoria on 3BS. 2ther lecturers will be *raham
0oore, 5ob Ashford and Aileen 5ibeiro.
Artist 'ouglas 'avid returns this season with several worN-
shops on painting in oils. 7he Asbury Shorts )ilm &oncert
comes bacN for the fifth year in )ebruary with two shows )eb. ,
featuring short films in all genres, many of them 2scar nominees
or film festival winners. 7his event is recommended for
viewers and older.
A second installment of the Astronomy Photographer of the Year
ehibition is scheduled for late summer. 7he tradition of free
admission Saturdays continues and in April will coincide with
the th &hildren·s Art )estival.
