he sun sets majestically over the Fort Pierce Inlet and the the
Indian River Lagoon beyond. Fort Pierce was named the Sunrise City
during a nickname contest in 1923 because of its views of the sunrise
over the Indian River Lagoon in the mornings. But the sunset view over the
lagoon looking toward the mainland is equally spectacular. When settlers first
arrived here, the only inlet was a meandering natural passage from the Atlantic
to the Indian River, later called the Indian River Inlet. Shoaling closed it in 1892
after the St. Lucie Inlet in Stuart opened. Construction of jetties and dredging in
1920-21 created the current Fort Pierce Inlet.
