THE BACK DOOR
Ed Register, 90, who was close friends with the governor’s
younger brother, John, remembers walking through the back door
of the McCarty house many times. “Hardly anyone came in the
front of the house.”
He remembers a garage behind the house for Mrs. McCarty’s
car and an office where Mrs. McCarty ran the family’s citrus
business. “You’d come in and the dining room was on the right,
which connected to the kitchen. She had all these antique chairs
with green velvet padding over them. As kids, we were all
afraid to sit in them.”
Upstairs, the three boys shared a dormitory-style bedroom,
each with a bed and a chest of drawers. A sleeping porch facing
the river was
added later.
Register said
the environment
the
future governor
grew up in
was firm but
positive.
“Mrs.
McCarty wanted
those boys
to achieve, and
they all did,
whether it was
in academics or
sports.”
