Hutchinson Island where it will
meet up with the 3,000-mile interstate
trail system going up the East
Coast to Maine.
“This trail through the city to
Heathcote is a good thing, and it’s
a priority,” Benton said. City and
county officials have been working
on it for about a year in conjunction
with the East Coast
Greenways and Trails Alliance,
which helps each state’s local governments
link trail sections together,
and Florida’s Office of
Greenways and Trails.
The city may designate an official
on-street section of the trail from
North Bridge to the roundabout at
Citrus Avenue in as little as six
months. A bike rider himself,
Benton said he’s been invited on
the inaugural trail ride. The
Heathcote connection will follow.
“Heathcote will help us preserve
our nationally renowned landscape
for future generations to
know and love,” Benton said.
“It’s a benefit to the city and to the
whole region,” said Cris Adams.
