year voted to allow Boyd to tear down the house, but in
January, the city commission reversed that decision. The
house is for sale, and Fort Pierce Redevelopment Agency
Director Jon Ward said he has recently held discussions with
several people interested in buying it.
Besides the house on the drive and his grave at the Palms
Cemetery on South Indian River Drive, several visible tributes
to Dan McCarty remain. One of the county’s middle
schools (formerly a high school) is named for him, as well as
a portion of U.S. 1. A plaque on the west side of the City Hall
Annex pays tribute to McCarty.

POLITICAL HISTORY
A sign on the west side of the Fort Pierce City Hall Annex marks a section
of U.S. 1 as the Dan McCarty Memorial Highway. At right, the McCarty
family house on Indian River Drive near downtown when it was under
construction about 1905.
The McCarty family home, which underwent several alterations through the years, is now vacant and for sale. The city’s Historic Preservation Board
voted to allow the building to be demolished, but the city commission reversed the ruling.
