with un-realistic
expectations a close second.
All four agree they could write a book or a soap opera.
“We’d call it ‘As the Chair Turns,’ ” says Mautz.
Over the years they’ve seen a million hairstyles come and
go. “For a long time, I only knew how to blow dry and use a
curling iron,” says McIntyre. “Betty had to teach me how to
tease and use rollers.”
They agree that America’s No. 1 hair problem is the cowlick,
Betty Cain has styled hair for 45 years, sometimes caring for three generations
of the same family.

“They’ll come in with a picture and want us to make them
look like that. But they don’t want to color their hair or blow
dry it, so we have to be honest and tell them we’re not magicians,”
Cain says, laughing.
In 1990, many customers wanted the Rachel, inspired by
Jennifer Anniston. Today, the style is an inverted bob: tapered
short in back, with long and angled sides.
Cleaning up at the end of the day, De Sanctis leaves to attend
a customer’s wake. A young woman with multi-colored
hair walks in, asking for advice. Everyone is happy to help. E
